Dominic
de Guzman was born in Spain in 1170. He studied theology and
was ordained a priest. In 1205 he and his bishop traveled to
Rome where Pope Innocent III spoke to them about the Albigensian
heresy. Dominic gathered a group of followers and sent them out
to preach the faith and to expose the mistakes of the Albigenses.
The group grew rapidly and was approved by the Church as the
Order of Preachers (Dominicans). Dominic later founded a convent
of women who were to become the Dominican Sisters. He died in
Italy in 1221. His feast day is celebrated on August 8. |
